After attending a workshop in October of 2010 I was approached about writing a column for Life is Good magazine. I had previously written a couple of articles that had been published but it had been years since I had dabbled with this interest. I accepted the challenge to do the column and have continued to write even more!
In January of 2011 I started writing a blog. Although I work 40hrs a week I felt the desire to challenge myself to stay artistic and inspired. The blog project includes art and writing. Starting with the idea of the Artistist Trading Card format I create a small piece of art using materials and ideas for each specific day. I am calling these cards "Artist Journal Cards" because they are a visual and artistic journal of my day. Furthermore, I record a few thoughts about that day and try to include a positive idea. This project is proving to be very beneficial. It is causing me to be more attentive to each day! This, in itself is enough to make me glad that I have ventured out to try this. Secondly, creating art and writing in this brief, spontaneous manner does for me what gesture drawing does for the sketch artist. It forces you to hit the high spots, to capture that which is most important. It trains you to see globally instead of getting lost in the detail. At times I am tempted to go back and edit but for a perfectionist type it is a beneficial growth experience to just lighten up and have one place where there is more value in the reality of the moment with all its flaws.
I am excited about adding samples of my writing to this website! Not only will you find recent samples of my writing there will also be a few bits from my past. You will see my personal journey reflected in my writing just as it is illustrated throughout my artistic work. The writing you find here is my original work.
