| Tissue paper is that thin colored paper that people put in the top of a gift bag when you get a present. Instead of throwing it away, save it and make a collage! The overlapping colors make new colors and your collage will make a beautiful backdrop for drawings. A collage is a type of art work made by sticking cloth, pieces of paper, photographs or other objects on to a flat surface. The collage technique was inented by Pablo Picasso. The word collage is derived from the French word "coller" which means to "paste". These instructions are for a tissue paper collage but you could make a different kind of collage if you want to use cloth, pictures or something else. 1. Use a sturdy piece of paper for your work. I usually use white but you can also use colored poster board or construction paper. Gather your other supplies which include tissue paper, a paintbrush, a marker to draw with and some Mod Podge. Also you need an idea, pictures or something to look at which will be your subject. 2. Decide what you will draw. If you only have certain colors of tissue paper this may help you decide. If you have an assortment of colors you may choose to draw flowers like the samples here. Begin to cut or tear your tissue paper into small squares, shapes or circles. 3. Using your paintbrush, spread some ModPodge on to your paper and lay a piece of tissue paper on top of it. Spread more ModPodge on top of the tissue paper. Be careful not to push down too hard or you will tear the tissue paper. You may also try using school glue instead of ModPodge but it should be watered down a little. Some people have also used varnish but remember it has a strong smell and you must use turpentine to clean your paintbrush. Overlap the pieces of tissue paper and continue until the whole page is filled with color. Make sure there is a good layer of ModPodge on top of it all. 4. After your collage has dried completely you are ready to draw. I like to use a permanent Sharpie type marker. A medium tip is fine but you may want to sue a fine tip if you want to draw in a lot of detail. If you are drawing flowers it is helpful to have some real flowers to look at. Silk or plastic flowers work fine also. If all else fails, find some photographs to look at! Pay close attention to the detail... what does the center look like? Are the petals pointed or round? Are there many petals or just a few? How do the petals overlap? Don't forget to add the leaves! |
