| I have been fascinated with the history of The Balinese Room for some time. Several years ago I did a couple of oil paintings of this historical site, setting up on the seawall in Galveston to work. I also worked from some photographs I took of this place and added a little bit of imagination too. It had been restored and revived yet walking through the structure felt like stepping back into time. The murals and much of the original furnishings were still in the ballroom where Sinatra and many other greats performed. I even got to celebrate my 50th birthday there and enjoyed the music of our favorite local artist, Hamilton Loomis! Hurricane Ike took this treasure of Galveston history away. It no longer exists. I feel very fortunate to have seen this place in person. I have gambling chips, bamboo cups, napkins, my paintings and lots of good memories to remember this place! |
