Janis Harper
A little history:
I was born in Texas and have lived in the Houston area all my life.  I've worked as a freelance artist, photographer, curriculum exhibitor and art educator.  My own interest in art began as a child and that is why I think it is so important for children to have the opportunity to have creative experiences as soon as possible.

Credentials:
I homeschooled my children beginning in 1983 and continued through 1999.  During this time I shared art with my own six children and other homeschooled families.  My creative activities included writing and I enjoyed the success of having several articles published in national magazines. I eventually took classes from local artist,
Katy Breeden, but primarily I pursued art through self-directed study and community work.  In 1999 I entered the work force and also returned to college.  My art began to take a new course that would be more public.  I had the opportunity to take a painting class from Russian artist, Ilya Lerner.  I met Jesus Moroles and had the privilege of visiting his facility in Rockport.  He gave me some great advice on my own art and inspired me to continue painting..  My involvement with Houston CowParade 2001 opened many new doors.  I remain active as a volunteer and have created winning entries for fundraisers such as CowParade, Chairs for Children and Holiday Treasures in the Galleria.  "A Starry Night in Texas", my CowParade design, was chosen by Westland Giftware to be reproduced as one of the miniature figurines in the collectible series.  My work has been sold independently to individuals and has been on exhibit at Neiman Marcus, Bailey, Banks and Biddles, City Hall in Houston, Lee College Art Gallery, Hallmark stores and museum gift shops, boutiques and art festivals.

The Future:
I like to oil paint, work with clay, draw, do photography and digital design, make jewelry, collages and try new art forms.  Although there is value in focusing on one art medium I will always continue to grow and change as an artist.  Teaching art keeps me from growing stagnant.  I love to recycle and make new things from old things.  Art has become an important journal and visual expression of the things that are important to me.  It is a celebration of life.
